The 100th Year Anniversary Red Carpet Event with Cicely Tyson and India Arie was a phenomenal success!  With over 700 guests in attendance, the historic Lincoln Theater housed the NAACP's premier event for 2009 hosted by Joe Madison, The Black Eagle.

Earlier that evening the DC Branch hosted a reception with Ms. Tyson, for sponsors and community leaders to celebrate the  Red Carpet Centennial event.    The crowd featured an impressive list of attendees –including   NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous, Vice Chair of NAACP National Board Roslyn Brock, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, U.S. Reps. Diane Watson and Al Green, Deputy Education Secretary Tony Miller, Noted Author Michael Eric Dyson and Howard University President Sidney Ribeau.

The program began with an outstanding musical performance by several students from Washington DC’s renowned  Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  The featured event of the evening was a conversation with acclaimed Emmy Award winning actress Cicely Tyson where she discussed the triumphs, successes, and challenges of her remarkable career.  She was interviewed by  noted author and human rights activist, the Reverend Marcia Dyson.  Miss Tyson's inspiring message of perseverance and faith captivated  guest of all ages.   Following the interview,  the crowd was at times moved to tears by the  amazing performance of  Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter India Arie.   Miss Arie, dedicated her performance to Miss Tyson, and remarked on what an inspiration Miss Tyson has been for her own career.  Her performance, which included new material and displayed her own musical prowess on the flute and guitar,  inspired the hearts and minds of everyone in attendance.   It truly was a befitting tribute to the NAACP’s 100 year old fight for  social justice.  Cicely Tyson and India Arie were both honored with the DC Branch NAACP Centennial Award, acknowledging their pivotal roles and contributions to the fight for social justice.

Mrs. Edna Hardmon, who celebrated her 100th birthday in January of this year, received the Freedom Fighter Award for outstanding commitment and service to the DC NAACP.  Mrs. Hardmon served for over 50 years in the DC NAACP,   and as membership captain at her church,  Walker Memorial.

If you missed this phenomenal event, join us for our final events of the year including our NAACP Red Carpet Event for young professionals in December 2009, "A Holiday Soiree."  And our annual DC Branch Holiday Party.  You don't want to miss these events!
