The NAACP Centennial Empowerment Week successfully epitomized the cornerstone of the NAACP as the leading advocate in the fight for social justice.
Monday, April 13 through Saturday, April 18 was filled with a series of empowering social justice, educational, and social events commemorating the NAACP's 100 years. The Centennial Week was launched with the NAACP Town Hall Forum "We Hear You," which featured an opportunity for the community to voice their concerns about social justice issues including employment discrimination, housing discrimination, police brutality and education inequality. Featured guests included representatives from the NAACP Legal Department, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, DC Office of Human Rights, Reaching Out to Others Together, Inc., Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, and the Neighborhood Legal Services Program.
Tuesday featured a Veteran Affairs Forum "Protecting Our Dream and Serving Our Country" about the role of Veterans in the Civil Rights Movement and the issues confronting members of the armed services transitioning from active duty.
Wednesday featured an Economic Empowerment Workshop "How to Find Employment In This Economy" highlighting employment services, networking skills, job search tips, resume writing, KSA writing, and interviewing skills.
Thursday featured a Health Symposium "State of the Black Health," which addressed the health conditions disproportionately affecting the African-American community, including HIV/AIDS, depression, diabetes, hypertension, cancer and obesity.
Friday was the Membership Reception with the new President & CEO Benjamin Jealous, which was an excellent opportunity for members to engage the leadership of the NAACP. New members joined and current members upgraded their memberships to life memberships.
Saturday featured two exciting events. NAACP members joined with the EPA for an Earth Day Clean-Up of theAnacostia River in Kenilworth Park. Also the ACT-SO Competition featured highly talented students competing in Humanities, Performing Arts, Sciences, and Visual Arts.
